Emergency Departments Human Resources Study
Emergency Departments are a critical gateway to the health care system. Maintaining access to this gateway in the South West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), and, indeed, throughout the province, is a challenge that must be considered in the framework of the entire continuum of care.
In December 2008, the South West LHIN initiated a study of the human resources environment surrounding our emergency departments. Over 100 individuals were directly engaged in the work of this study and helped shape the findings and proposed strategies.
The Emergency Department Human Resources study has been guided by the LHIN’s Health System Design Steering Committee and as well as a Physician Advisory Group that was assembled to provide expertise, insights and guidance into the solutions that can be brought forward. The hospitals and their staff showed support for the study as engaged participants. The input of physicians, nurses, administration, and other support staff was a central component of the study. The level of expert participation allowed us an unprecedented detailed view of all the emergency departments in the South West LHIN.
The Emergency Department Human Resources Project Final Report was received by the South West LHIN Board of Directors at its meeting on May 27th 2009.
